Everest Base Camp is a classic trek offering magnificent close up views of Everest and panoramic views from Kala Pathar. From the moment you step out onto the unimposing airstrip at Lukla, the sense of excitement and anticipation in the air is palpable. The classic trail to Everest Base Camp includes; cutting through bustling Sherpa villages and past colourful tea houses; across glistening rivers and up steep-sided valleys. It is like no other – not least since the trail will lead us to the highest mountain in the world.

This is a classic trek in the Everest region, starting with a spectacular flight from Kathmandu to Lukla from where we take the main trail into the heart of Sherpa country. On the way we pass through a number of villages, so there is a chance to see a little of the Sherpa way of life. Its market stalls, local ridge walks and breath-taking views make it an ideal spot to rest and acclimatise.  The highlights of this Everst trek include Kala Pathar (5545m) for stunning views of the Khumbu Icefall, the South Face of Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, Lhotse and many more. You should bear in mind that achieving both of these goals requires good weather, excellent acclimatisation and a lot of stamina. Kala Pattar (5554m), is famous for its magnificent close up views of the Khumbu icefall and the SW face of Everest. It is an awe-inspiring place to stand, and is encompassed on all sides by a breath-taking 360° vista of peaks and glaciers.

  • Arrival

    Arrive in Kathmandu

    • Phakding (Fly to Lukla)

After meeting our porters and sorting out loads, we set off for the village of Phakding (2656m) 3 hours.

      • Namche Bazaar (3445m)

We climb steadily on a winding path on the banks of the Dudh Kosi River, through villages and forests dwarfed by gigantic rock walls until a final climb that brings us into Namche Bazaar. Namche is in a unique position surrounded by mountain ranges with colourful houses scattered in an amphitheatre of rock. (5-6 hours).

        • Kyanjuma (3600m)

Today we hike up to the Kyanjuma (3600m) Japanese made Everest View Hotel, located at altitude of 3880m. The walk up is fairly steep but along the way you get great views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and many other mountains. It's basically an acclimatisation walk. We descend to Kyanjuma via Khumjung and Khunde villages visiting the Hillary School, Khunde Hospital and Khunjung Monastery that houses the only Yeti skull.

          • Thyangboche (3867m)

Its 4 hrs walk today. First we walk 1hr downhill to the Imja Khola and cross by a suspension bridge. We then climb 21/2 hrs steeply through the rhododendron forest up to Thyangboche in time for lunch. For those interested, they can go to the monastery for evening service. If the weather is clear you get amazing sunset views on Everest.

            • Dingboche (4360m)

A gradual climb leads us to the highest settlement in the area, the Sherpa village of Dingboche. A slow and steady pace as we gain altitude will reap benefits. 5hrs

              • Dingboche (4360m)

We spend an extra night here which will help with acclimatisation. There are several options at Dingboche. You can follow a gradual trail up the Imja Khola towards the village of Chukkung (4750m). Or you can attempt to climb Nangkartshang Peak (5100m) which is 3hrs steep up and 2hrs down for amazing views of an array of peaks including Makalu ( the 5th highest Mountain on earth ) and Ama Dablam.

                • Taboche (6367m)

We set off on a good track which climbs at first, then contours beneath the steep east face of Taboche (6367m) before reaching Dughla. From here an initial tough climb levels off after the crest at approx 4840m where we can take a rest and reflect on the many memorials to climbers which have been built on this plateau. Now the trail climbs gently to reach the lodges at Lobuche, alongside the Khumbu Glacier. (5 hours).

                  • Gorak Shep (5180m) Visiting Everest Base Camp

An early start for Gorak Shep. We follow the main trail over moraine beside the KhumbuGlacier and arrive at the tiny settlement in 2-3 hours for a welcome hot drink and lunch before setting off for one of our goals – Everest Base Camp (5300m), situated on the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We return to Gorak Shep in the evening. Today is a long day with about 10 hrs walking.

                    • Kala Pathar (5545m)

Today’s activities will depend on energy, weather, and what was achieved yesterday. The weather is usually clearer in the early mornings so an ascent of Kala Pathar (5545m) at first light may be the best plan. It takes about 2-3 hours to reach the top and from there we can see Everest’s magnificent south face and the Khumbu Icefall. We aim to descend as far as Pheriche today for a better sleep at lower altitude. 8 hours total.

                      • Descend to Monzo 2800m

From Pheriche we drop down to Pangboche (4000m) and then retrace our steps past the rock and ice spire of Ama Dablam to Debuche where it’s worth looking out for eagles, musk deer, thar and Himalayan monal pheasants. A half hour climb leads from Debuche up through the woods to Thyangboche from where we descend through the forest to Imja Khola and then climb back up to Kyanjuma, where we stay the night. From here we pass along beautiful hillsides high above the Dudh Kosi River to reach Namche Bazaar. If you missed the museum or National Park headquarters on the way up, there will be time to fit these in. We then descend through Namche and Jorsale to Monzo. The previous day is 6hrs walking and today is 5 hours walking.

                        • Lukla (2850m)

Our last days walk takes us back through Phakding, from where we have a final climb to Lukla. 5 hrs walking. Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu
